THEME: RELIGIOUS HYPOCRITES
TEXT: MATTHEW 23:1-13
MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 23: 13 “But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye
neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.”
The book of the Acts of the Apostles, written by Luke, started with a very notable testimony about Christ Jesus in chapter 1 verse 1 “…all that Jesus began to do and to teach”. Jesus started His own ministry by first doing what was considered right and then taught others to do the same. This He did …until the day He was taken up…” This is the true life of a righteous man. The Pharisees must have been the true reflection of the laws of God if they had practised the Law of Moses with the right mind. However, they were religious hypocrites, deceiving people with outward pretenses but inwardly they were far from the Lord.

It is hypocrisy when a man preaches one thing and does another, when someone projects a good character but is inwardly a brute. Jesus told the people to be careful about such persons, because the real danger is, they easily deceive people and so to lose the kingdom of heaven. Verse 13 says they shut the kingdom of God in people’s faces and they themselves would not go in and so prevented others from going in. There are many people who esteemed them very highly and tried to emulate their character and thereby were misled into error. If someone had used Judas Iscariot as a role model, he would have ended his life like him and gone to the same place he went.

Beloved, living like a Pharisee or being hypocritical is very injurious to your spiritual life. It is very damaging and runs contrary to the dictates of God. It was easy for people to follow Christ all around because He was not like the Scribes nor the Pharisees. The question is: As a Christian, how do people perceive you? As a hypocrite or as a true Christian? Eight times, in Matt. 23: 13-33, Jesus declared woes on Scribes, Pharisees and hypocrites. Woe is a curse, you know.

HYMN: EMHB 404 – HOW BLEST IS LIFE IF LIVED FOR THEE…
PRAYER: Everlasting Father, help me to be pure inside and outside and remove any iota of hypocrisy in me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
