THEME: GOD, OUR DEFENDER
TEXT: PSALM 62: 1-12
MEMORY VERSE: PSALM62:6 – He only is my Rock and my Salvation;
He is my defence; I shall not be moved.
The effects of global warming, terrorism and rise in antibiotics-resistant bacteria are just a few of developments that have made the world more like the “shadow of the valley of death.” Perilous times, however, dates back beyond the last decade.
In Psalm 62, David resolved to wait for the salvation of God. “In God is my salvation and my glory; the Rock of my strength, and my Refuge, is in God.” (V. 7) To David, God is a shelter from danger or hardship, delivered him from the stormy blast of this world. Indeed, God alone is our sure defender. Body guards, bullet-proof vehicles, high fences and other man-made security gadgets cannot defend anyone from “the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor the destruction that lays waste at noonday”.
David’s secret to having unfettered access to God’s divine security was his absolute confidence in God’s power to defend and to save. This is the confidence that he displayed privately and publicly and which God expects of us as His children. We can have this confidence by bringing into remembrance the intervention of God in tough situations that have confronted us in the past. (Read Psalm 22:4-5)
The good news is that Jesus saves and He wants to save you. Reflect on the time you were ill and how you recovered; the times you traversed dangerous terrains and you came through; tough financial times and how you were bailed out; difficult relationships and how things worked out well in the end. Ascribe all glory and praise to God and thank Him. Present your current situation to God and have confidence that He will see you through. Your testimonies are on the way.
HYMN: EMHB 878 – O GOD, OUR HELP IN AGES PAST
PRAYER: Dear Father, defend me against all dangers and perils of this world.
