THEME: THE BETTER THINGS TO DO
TEXT: ECCLESIASTES 3:9-15
MEMORY VERSE: ECCLESIASTES 3:12 – I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives.
We live in an age of greed and materialism where people will go to any extent to satisfy the lust of the eyes and flesh. The writer of Ecclesiastes, believed to be King Solomon in his old age, reflected on life and came to the conclusion that there is no real value in earthly things and lifestyles. He reckoned that reverence for God and obedience to His commandments are the whole duty of mankind.
On man’s God-given task, the Preacher says, “I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives” (Eccl. 3:12). Jesus has given us a good example of how a Christian should handle his/her sojourn here on earth – doing good.
Goodness finds expression in kindness and hatred of evil. When Jesus healed people or fed them out of compassion, He was doing good. Interestingly, when He whipped and drove traders out of the temple, He was also doing good. Goodness is to be zealous for righteousness and to actively oppose evil. Unfortunately, evil thrives in the society, not because of the evil that men do but because of the goodness than men fail to do.
As Christians, our zeal for righteousness must propel us to share the Good News with other people. We must tell people of the difference Christ has made in our lives. We must emulate Jesus by having compassion on those who face hardship and are hurt. We must be sensitive to the needs of people around us. Above all, we must overcome evil with good. We do this by being courageous to say the truth and oppose falsehood even when we are the lone voice. Say no to corruption and indiscipline, stop unwholesome practices when we find ourselves at the helm of affairs in public or private institutions and say, “not under my watch”
HYMN: EMHB 490 – FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT WITH ALL THY MIGHT
PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to focus on heavenly and eternal things as opposed to earthly and temporal things.
