THEME: TRUE REST
TEXT: MATTHEW 11:25-30
MEMORY VERSE: Genesis 2:3 – Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
Jesus offered a different kind of rest to the Jews when He said, “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matt. 11:28). He saw the heavy burden that the Law had imposed on them. The scribes and the teachers of the Law had brought strict interpretations which made obedience to the Law’s righteousness very rigorous. For example, healing on a Sabbath day was unacceptable; walking beyond a certain distance violates the Sabbath law, etc. In His invitation, Jesus said, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matt. 11:29-30). In contrast to the heavy burden of Jewish legalism, Jesus offers a free and personal relationship which enables obedience to the demands of the Law.
A yoke is a connection between two things to make them move together. It is used for joining beast of burden like oxen, donkeys and horses together for various tasks. Animals that are yoked, work and walk together in the same direction. That is the relationship that Jesus offers to all and sundry. To work and walk closely with Him. The requirement of this relationship is simply faith in Him. obedience to His commandment. Jesus said that this task is also light because it is not by power or might but by the Holy Spirit who is given to us when we come to Jesus.
There are many demands of life which impose a heavy burden on us. Financial, health, relational, emotional and spiritual issues affect us in different dimensions and magnitude on a daily basis. They all work together to exert great pressure on us with dire consequences. The only solution is to have rest – true rest. Sleeping, engaging in different forms of relaxation or going for holiday can give us temporary relief from worldly pressure but not true rest. True rest is found only in Christ’s offer. Come to Jesus today and experience true rest.
