Daily Reflection: DROP THE FORMER CONDUCT – Friday 27th July, 2018

FRIDAY 27TH JULY, 2018
THEME: DROP THE FORMER CONDUCT
TEXT: EPHESIANS 4:17-32
MEMORY VERSE: EPHESIANS 4:22 – That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts.

A person cannot become a Christian and retain his former way of life. There must be a change in lifestyle that will be visible to everyone. The speech, conduct and general attitude of a Christian are inspired by a renewed mind powered by the indwelling Holy Spirit. This was the transformation that people saw in the lives of the members of the early Church when they called them Christians. The greatest insult that a professed Christian can receive is for a non-believer to say, “And he calls himself a Christian.” The on-going work of sanctification in the lives of Christians by the Holy Spirit is how God conforms us more and more to the image of Christ on a daily basis. There is a story of a sculptor who carved a magnificent lion out of solid stone. When asked how he accomplished such a wonderful masterpiece, he replied, “It was easy. All I did was to chip away everything that didn’t look like a lion.” God chips away everything in our lives that does not look like Christ.

Christians, however, have their own duties and responsibilities. Paul, in Ephesians 4:25-32, lists some of the former conduct which Christians are expected to drop and new ways of life that should be embraced. Lies, anger, laziness, bitterness, malice, evil speaking and conduct are former things that should pass away while love, kindness, forgiveness and other aspects of the fruit of the Spirit should dominate.

Let us do self-examination today to see if, indeed, the Holy Spirit dwells in us and controls us. The good news is that it is not too late to make amend if we fail the test. We can confess our sins and weaknesses today and ask for the help of the Holy Spirit to live a Christ-like life.

HYMN: EMHB 547 – THE THING MY GOD DOTH HATE
PRAYER: Lord, anoint me to hate the things You hate and love what You love.
