THEME: A BARREN FIG TREE?
TEXT: LUKE 13:6-9
MEMORY VERSE: MATTHEW 3:10 “And now also the axe is laid unto the fruit of the trees: therefore, every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is cut down cast into fire.”
The fig tree is one of the most popular of the 29 trees mentioned in the Bible. It is of two kinds; the early and the late fig trees. Its leaves are always very big. No wonder Adam and Eve sewed fig leaves to cover themselves from the shame of nakedness they found themselves in Gen. 3:7. In the remaining days of your life, you will not experience physical, financial or any nakedness or barrenness in Jesus’ name. Amen.
A barren fig three is good for nothing. You hardly can sit under it because of the ants that stream its stem. In Palestine and Egypt, fruit trees are planted in gardens or orchards so they are always well taken care of. Fig trees always bring fruits 10 out the 12 months of the year and their fruits are always fleshy like mangoes or apple, and delicious.
What happens then when a fig tree refuses to have fruit? Your guess is as good as mine – cut it off. If a man or a woman is unproductive in a place of work, will the manager allow such a worker to continue to receive pay? God forbid. If a baby born three years ago, cannot crawl or talk, will the parents be happy?
That is what happens when a sinner refuses to repent. God sent Prophet Jonah to Nineveh, the then capital town of Assyria, to warn them of an impending doom unless they repented. When they repented, God let them off the hook but a century or so later God wiped them off the face of the earth when they went back to sin. The same happened to Babylon “the great” and Sodom and Gomorrah. Do you still hear about them today? It is the Law of God that “It shall not be well with the wicked.
Don’t be like the barren fig tree or the stump of a once flourishing tree? As you approach the year 2019, determine not to be a barren fig tree. Beloved, be fruitful.
HYMN: EMHB 361- WHERE SHALL MY WONDERING SOUL BEGIN?
PRAYER: Gracious and merciful Father, don’t allow me to be like a barren fig tree but make me productive to positively affect live and win souls for Kingdom in Jesus name.
