TEXT: JOHN 3:1-8
MEMORY VERSE: JOHN 3:3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” RSV

Let the whole creation rejoice and offer jubilant praise to God Almighty for the birth of the New Year of our Lord 2019. As people of faith, we have great hope for the year because we are not ordinary. We are a peculiar people and God’s royal priesthood! It is a year of great expectation in Nigeria as we look forward for a new government. It is a year of fresh life in Christ Jesus. It is the Lord’s Year. We shall stand strong and steadfast and make real good progress in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.

A fresh life requires fresh beginning and it must start at a point. Every journey starts at a point. So is the journey of eternal life. Here again, as we read in our text for the day, the ancient verity which Jesus Christ unequivocally declared to Nicodemus stands firm before you and me, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, “Unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”’ As the Lord Jesus explained, the new birth or being born anew is not to be born a second time from our mother’s womb. It is entirely a spiritual birth executed by the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit testifies of and reveals Jesus Christ and convicts us of sin, God’s judgment and righteousness (John 16:7-11). The combination of conviction of the Holy Spirit, faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and confession of the mouth bring about the spiritual birth (Romans 10:8-10).

The result of Spiritual birth is a relationship with God, ‘… to all who received him (Jesus), to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God’ (John 1:12-13 NIV). Hence, being born again is fresh life full of joy in the Holy Spirit, peace and righteousness in God. It is a beautiful life to be reconciled with God! Give a try and see!

HYMN: MHB 321 LORD, I hear of showers of blessing

PRAYER: O God, by your mercy and compassion, grant me a fresh and new lease of life as I begin this New Year in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
