WEDNESDAY 2ND JANUARY, 2019
THEME: GO WITH GOD 1
TEXT: EXODUS 33:12-17
MEMORY VERSE: EXODUS 33:14 The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest” (NIV).
The year still is very new and fresh, and the joy of seeing it continues. Wonderful! The joy will, however, be deeper if there is an assurance of God’s Presence going with the everyone. What does it mean to have God’s presence with you? John Piper, founder of Desiring God, in response to this type of question describes God’s presence as, ‘His presence as we experience him is the heightening of his reality in our lives either for good, if we are in his grace, or for ill, if we are under his wrath. Which is why Jesus makes all the difference here; to shield us and make God a welcoming reality or presence for us.’
In Exodus 33:1-11, the Lord expressed His disgust for the people and accused them of being stiff-necked and decided that He would not go with them to the promise land. It is a very frustrating experience for a benefactor to withdraw support. The people of Israel cried and mourned on hearing this word of rejection through Moses and the Lord heard their cry and sent the reassuring word, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’ Wao! This God is merciful!
There is nothing that attracts the wrath of God than taking Him for granted or ignoring Him as if He does not matter. I hope in the previous year or times, you have not acted in such a way as to make the Lord unhappy. Sin and disobedience and wickedness pierce the heart of God because He is holy and cannot behold iniquity. But the Lord actually desires and loves us and sent Immanuel, God with us, Jesus Christ the Righteous who alone is worthy before God.
God is never absent at any point but in His wrath, we will not enjoy the benefits of His Presence; rather, we will be left on our own till we realise our failure and sins and come back to our Maker in penitence. So, do the right thing, and God’s assurance of divine presence will be your portion in every aspect throughout the 2019.
HYMN: MHB 611 –Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us
PRAYER: Father, nothing affects your presence anywhere and anytime. Only grant that I should not be ignorant of this reality at any moment.
ONCE AGAIN, ENJOY THE NEW YEAR!
