THEME: HASTY CONCLUSION

PASSAGE: GEN. 44:1-9
1. And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his sack’s mouth. 2. And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack’s mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken. 3. As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses. 4. And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good? 5. Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing. 6. And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words. 7. And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing: 8. Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord’s house silver or gold? 9. With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord’s bondmen.

MESSAGE
This bible story of today is of great lesson to us on how we need to react to false accusations. Joseph deliberately did what he did to get his brother, Benjamin, arrested and detained so he could have close contact with him. Joseph arranged for his golden cup to be packed in his brother’s bag so he could be framed for stealing it (verses 2). It had been a long time Joseph had sought for Benjamin, and he had longed for that brotherly fellowship with him. Of course, it is good to declare one’s integrity anywhere, anytime but we must be careful to avoid cursing or making a hasty statement that may boomerang. The brothers of Joseph were trying to prove that they were innocent, holy and irreproachable. They have quickly forgotten that they were liars, evil conspirators and murderers.

“What are you talking about?” the brothers responded. “What kind of people do you think we are that you accuse us of such a terrible thing? Didn’t we bring back the money we found in our sacks? Why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house? If you find his cup with any one of us, let that one die. And all the rest of us will be your master’s slaves forever” (Gen. 44:7-9). Unknown to them, the cup was hidden in Benjamin’s bag and that brought about their arrest.

Have you ever sworn, ‘if I ever do this or that, let God strike me dead?’ or ‘if I do not come tomorrow, let me sleep and never wake up?’ Remember you are not God! Even James warned us not to boast of tomorrow, what will be, because we don’t know what tomorrow may be (James 4:13-16). Also read Judges 11:30-39; 21:5-6, Acts 23:12.

So learn to say. ‘It is not me’ rather than say. ‘If it is found to be me, let so and so happen.’ Don’t lay a curse on yourself to prove your innocence. Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ to be ‘No!’

HYMN: EMHB 442 (CM)
1: HAPPY the heart where graces reign,
Where love inspires the breast;
Love is the brightest of the train,
And perfects all the rest.

2: Knowledge, alas, ’tis all in vain,
And all in vain our fear;
Our stubborn sins will fight and reign,
If love be absent there.

3: ’Tis love that makes our cheerful feet
In swift obedience move:
The devils know, and tremble too;
But Satan cannot love.

4: This is the grace that lives and sings,
When faith and hope shall cease;
’Tis this shall strike our joyful strings
In the sweet realms of bliss.

5: Before we quite forsake our clay,
Or leave this dark abode,
The wings of love bear us away
To see our smiling God.

MEMORY VERSE:
Gen. 44:9 “If you find his cup with any one of us, let that one die. And all the rest of us will be your master’s slaves forever.”

PRAYER:
Almighty God, help me to bridle my tongue and spirit so I will not make hasty pronouncements that will stand against me or my house in Jesus’ name. Amen.
