THEME: CHOSEN BUT STUBBORN
TEXT: JER. 6:16-19
16. Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. 17. Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken. 18. Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them. 19. Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it.
The story of Prophet Jonah in the Scripture is a typical example of people God called to a certain responsibility but failed. Jonah was chosen by God to go and preach to the people of Nineveh, the old Assyrian capital, so that they could turn away from their evil ways and avert God’s wrath upon them but Jonah stubbornly refused God and went his own way.
The passage read this morning represents an image of travellers who were lost, stopping to inquire about the right way they once knew before they wandered so far off it. The people of Israel were chosen by God as His own people. He formed, established and made them a nation. What a good God! Instead of living in obedience to God’s commands and instructions, the Israelites chose to go their own way. What a stubborn generation!
The same is applicable to many people in the world today. God has chosen us in Christ. He sent Jesus, who took our sins away and invited us to accept Him as Lord and Saviour. Unfortunately, many people are yet to respond to this clarion call. Many have gone astray and turned to their own way and failed to heed God’s instructions like Jonah.
The danger of being stubborn to God’s word is that such a person will always operate under closed heavens and will receive no favour of God upon his/her life. Eventually, such a person will end up in hell to suffer eternally for his/her stupidity and stubbornness.
The only way to avoid this is to accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour; heed God’s instructions and escape the wrath that awaits the children of disobedience. Do not harden your heart, my brother/sister because hell is real and it will be terrible to end up there! Do what Jesus advised us to do in Matt 6:33.
HYMN: EMHB 681 (220.127.116.11.7.7.)
1: 1: GOD of mercy, God of grace,
Show the brightness of thy face;
Shine upon us, Saviour, shine,
Fill Thy Church with light divine;
And Thy saving health extend
Unto earth’s remotest end.
2: Let the people praise Thee, Lord;
Be by all that live adored;
Let the nations shout and sing
Glory to their Saviour King;
At Thy feet their tribute pay,
And Thy holy will obey.
3: Let the people praise Thee, Lord;
Earth shall then her fruits afford;
God to man his blessings give,
Man to God devoted live;
All below, and all above,
One in joy and light and love.
MEMORY VERSE: Jeremiah 6:17 “I appointed watchmen over you and said ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’ But you said, ‘We will not listen.”
Help me O Lord, to heed your directives, so that I do not incur your wrath in the end, through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.
