TEXT: ACTS 2: 42-47
42. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 44. And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45. And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. 46. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, 47. Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
When Adam was created (Gen. 1:26, 2:25) by God, He did not want him to be alone. He created Eve as his helpmate. The major reason why God gave Eve to Adam was for companionship and fellowship. Therefore we have not been created to exist as an island. The more reason why the church grew in leaps and bounds in the early stage as found in Acts is because of fellowship and companionship.
After the preaching of Peter on the Day of Pentecost, about 3,000 souls were added to the church. These people then devoted themselves to fellowship i.e. coming together, living together, sharing together and staying together. Let us note the components of their fellowship -Devotion to apostolic teaching, Breaking of bread; Prayer; Having everything in common; Sharing according to individual needs; Meeting daily in the Temple; Eating together in their homes and Being in one accord.
All these are the hallmark of fellowship of believers, and the result was tremendous growth of the early church in all ramifications.
As believers, we are not called to exist independent of other believers. Iron sharpens iron! Wood can never sharpen iron. The Bible admonishes us that we should not cultivate the habit of neglecting the fellowship of believers.
As family members are closely knit, believers are expected to be inter-woven, praying together, sharing the word of God together, sharing each other’s joys and sorrows. The high and the low must share, fellowship together, bear one another’s burden.
*HYMN: EMHB 717 (CM)*
1: HELP us to help each other, Lord,
Each other’s cross to bear,
Let each his friendly aid afford,
And feel his brother’s care.
2: Help us to build each other up,
Our little stock improve;
Increase our faith, confirm our hope,
And perfect us in love.
3: Up into Thee, our living Head,
Let us in all things grow,
Till Thou hast made us free indeed,
And spotless here below.
4: Then, when the mighty work is wrought,
Receive Thy ready bride;
Give Us in heaven a happy lot
With all the sanctified.Amen.
*MEMORY VERSE:* Hebrews 10: 25. “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
*PRAYER:* Dear Lord, make me an instrument of Your love, brotherhood and progress in
the fellowship of believers redeemed by Your blood for Christ’s sake. Amen.
