Theme:   Avoid Hindrances

Passage: Mark 9: 38 – 50

The disciples were jealous of a man who healed in Jesus’ name because they were more concerned about their own group position than in helping to free those troubled by demons. Many Christians do the same today refusing to participate in worthy works/services because the people or group doing the good works are not members of their denomination, the projects do not involve the kind of people with whom we feel most comfortable, others don’t do things the way we are used to doing things. Such efforts won’t receive their recognition and commendation.

Correct theology is important but should never be an excuse or hindrance to avoid helping people in need. People who are on Jesus’ side have the same goal of building up the Kingdom of God and they should not let their differences interfere with this goal. Those who share a common faith in Christ should cooperate. People don’t have to be just like us to be following Jesus with us.

In verses 43 – 48 of our text, Jesus used startling language to stress the reality of hell fire for sinners, and every hindrance to our entering the Kingdom of God. Jesus Christ also gives an insight about hell fire in verses 44, 46 and 48, adding that sinners in hell fire shall “be salted” with the unquenchable fire. Painful discipline is required of His true followers to avoid such situation. Giving up a relationship, job, or habit that is against God’s will may seem just as painful as cutting off a hand. Our high goal, however, is worth any sacrifice; To gain Christ is more than any possible loss. Nothing should stand in the way of faith. We must be ruthless in removing sins from our lives now to avoid eternal doom in hell. Hell is not a good place to go.

MEMORY VERSE: Mark 9: 47 “And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out; it is better for you to enter the Kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes be thrown into hell”.

HYMN: MHB 238 – MY FAITH looks up to Thee

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, remove anything in my life that may hinder me from making heaven in Jesus’ name. Amen.
