 Theme: Don’t Please Man

Passage: I Thessalonians 2:1-4

There is a saying that ‘Everyone cannot be your friend and you cannot be a friend of everyone.’ The truth of this assertion is that it is impossible to please everybody. The moment a Christian attempts to please everyone, he/she will please nobody and soon becomes a plant on the sea, being tossed about up and down.

Paul told the Thessalonian Church the unpleasant experience he and other missionaries went through at Philippi in the course of making the gospel of the resurrected Lord known to them and offering the free gift of God in Christ Jesus (Acts 17:1-9). Though the people were eager to hear Paul, they expected him to say what they wanted to hear but he refused to please them instead he pleased God.

It is unfortunate that some preachers will change the topic and contents of their message when certain people like Mr. President, Chairman of political party, member of National or State House Assembly, State Governor or Awardees of the Church attend their worship service, so that they do not withhold their money or become angry. Some preachers want to enjoy the patronage of the so-called influential members to gain cheap popularity and acceptance.

It is better to please God than men because if your way pleases God, He will make everyone, even your enemies to be at peace with you (Prov. 16: 7). God is the Creator of every man and woman. Please Him in all that you do as a Christian and His wonderful works will manifest in your life.

MEMORY VERSE: I Thess. 2: 4 “But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts.”

HYMN: MHB 710 – BRETHREN in Christ, and well-beloved

PRAYER: Glorious Father, create in me the spirit that makes me to please you above everyone and everything in life, through Jesus Christ my Saviour. Amen.
