THEME: STAY CONNECTED WITH CHRIST
PASSAGE: COLOSSIAN 2:13-23
HYMN: 461 – O for a closer walk with God.
MEMORY VERSE: Colossians 2:19″….and they are not connected to Christ the head of the body. For He holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.
Apostle Paul in today’s text is teaching us as he taught the Colossian church some fundamental truths about the Christian faith, which are also keys to our Christian journey. After being born again, the Christian’s experience shows that the forces of the Spirit and the flesh are constantly fighting each other for supremacy so that one is not free to carry out one’s good intentions (Gal.5:17). How a Christian conquers his evil desire was Paul’s main concern in today’s passage.
The Colossian church had resorted to the keeping of man-made rules as the solution to the problem of evil desires. Just as we find in contemporary times, they had become legalistic in their ways. It seemed that was the wise thing to do because it required strong devotion, pious self-denial and severe bodily discipline. But that is not God’s antidote to the problem of evil desires. Here are God’s methods:
– You must strongly hold on to the truth that you died with Christ, and that He has set you free from the Spiritual powers of the world (vs. 20).
– Stay connected to Christ, the head of the body, through consistent communion with Him in prayer and meditation on His Word.
– John 15:4-5. Abide in Christ consistently in order to be fruitful.
It is when we stay connected to Him that we can produce fruits that will abide, and do good works. For it is He who is working in us, giving us the desire and the power to do what pleases Him. (Phil.2:13)
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help me to always abide in You, in order to produce much fruit throughout my life. Amen.
