THEME: CALLED TO BE ONE
PASSAGE: EPHESIANS 4:1–16
As Christians, the sign or evidence that we are spiritually mature is the spirit of oneness. Our Saviour prayed to God just before His ascension that we may all be one (John 17:21). Yet, after over two thousand years we are still struggling with this matter. Something is wrong! It is, no doubt, lack of unity.
Paul in his letter to the Ephesian Church (or Churches) consisting of Jews and Gentiles, individuals from Asia Minor and Europe, slaves and freemen, made it clear that unity in the Church assures the ultimate unity of God’s universe.
A commentator asked two very pertinent questions: Why did God give spiritual gifts? What was His purpose in giving special leadership gifts to the church? The answers are clearly stated in our passage today:
– For the equipping of the saints for the work of the ministry;
– For the edifying of the body of Christ ;
– That we all can come into the unity of the faith and knowledge of the Son of God;
– To grow up in Christ and reflect His character;
– To no longer be led astray by false teachings.
He further stated that Church leaders are needed to foster, promote, and encourage unity. Paul reminded us, however, that no Christian is alone in this world and that we form a community of Faith with spiritual leaders to help encourage one another in our common journey. We are all together, part of that body of Christ. Let us allow this truth to form the basis for our living and in our walk with God and fellowship with one another.
PRAYER: Lord, endow us with the spirit of oneness to continue in one accord until You come again to harvest souls. Amen.
HYMN: 279 –O HOLY Spirit, God
MEMORY VERSE: Romans 15:5 “May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus.”
