SUNDAY 29TH MARCH, 2020
THEME: Unholy Alliance
PASSAGE: Ezra 9:1-5
HYMN: MHB 353 –JUST as I am, without one plea
MEMORY VERSE: Ezra 9:2 “For they have taken some of their daughters to be wives for themselves and for their sons; so that the holy race has mixed itself with the peoples of the lands. And in this faithlessness the hand of the officials and chief men has been foremost.”
Obedience to God’s instructions is, indeed, the key to every blessing. The thing a million sacrifices wouldn’t do, with simple obedience, one will achieve it. God warned the Israelites not to go into marriage alliance with the people of other lands (Ex. 34:15-16; Deut. 7:3-6; Josh. 23:11-13). It must be noted that this ordinance of endogamy was never given to deny Israelites of marrying pretty girls, civilized girls, those that are current in modeling, fashion and make-ups. It was also not given to create enmity with their neighbouring nations, nor for the sake of racism. It was given to avoid the possibility of idolatry which would create enmity between them and God.
To keep God’s law is not a favour done to God, but blessings to yourself; and to rebel against His Word or command is downfall as we saw in the lives of Israel’s great men especially their kings such Solomon, Ahab and Manasseh.
The Israelites rebelled and married foreign women and rebellion led them to exile. But, the most surprising thing in this passage is that soon after their suffering and eventual return, they went back to marrying strange women.
Brethren, it is only madness that can make someone to see death and walk into it. Intentional sin is suicide. Paul encouraged us in his second letter to the Corinthians, chapter six, verse fourteen, that we should not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. Righteousness and lawlessness have nothing in common, likewise light and darkness. When we know the law and fail to keep it, it is sin. Let us learn to stay away from every unholy-marriage with sin and God will remain for us to love and cherish forever.
PRAYER: Lord, renew our hearts that we may always obey Thy words, commands and precepts and save us from mixed multitude in Jesus’ name
