THEME: CHRIST THE ESSENCE OF LIVING
PASSAGE: PHILIPPIANS 1:12-26
HYMN: MHB 89- CHRIST, of all my hopes the ground
MEMORY VERSE: Philippians 1:21 “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain”
Some people don’t enjoy life; they just endure it. They think that they can’t be happy because of all the problems in their lives. Their lives have to be perfect before they are happy. But there is no such thing as a problem-free life. If you wait to be problem-free, you’ll never be joyful. Telling the story of Paul who was in miserable circumstances. He was under house arrest on trumped-up charges, awaiting trial whose outcome could result in his execution. We don’t know exactly where he was, but he was facing a trial before Nero, who was not exactly known for his attrocities towards Christians.
He was shipwrecked, stranded on an island, bitten by a poisonous snake, all before arriving in Rome and spending another two years there. In Rome, he had no privacy. Every four hours he got a new guard. He was chained up 24 hours a day like a harden criminal. I think you could say that Paul was in miserable and pitiable condition because of the gospel of Jesus Christ. But Paul said in Philippians 1:18, “I rejoice and I will continue to rejoice.” What was Paul’s secret? How can he be so joyful in prison? Apostle Paul believed that Jesus Christ was the essence of his living. He knew that Christ had the power to save and deliver him.
With Christ on our side, we can face every challenge and oppositions on our way. Beloved, no matter what we are going through presently in our various endeavours; the lesson for today’s study is that Joy comes from putting Jesus at the centre of one’s life. The joy of the Lord is always the strength of those who trust in Him.
PRAYER: Great God in Heaven, help us to follow your paths and walk in your ways so that we can enjoy the benefits of your Holy name. Amen.
