FRIDAY 17TH APRIL, 2020
THEME: FORGET NOT YOUR MAKER
PASSAGE: DEUTERONOMY 4:15-31
HYMN: MHB 811- THY Kingdom come, O God
MEMORY VERSE: Deuteronomy 4: 23 “Be careful not to forget the covenant of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden.”
God gave the Israelites stern warnings not to fall into the sin of idolatry. He warned them not to become corrupt and make for themselves an idol, an image of any shape whether in form human being, animal or objects. God sent Moses to warn the people not to forget His covenant arrangement with them and He expected them to keep it. He promised to punish them if they went contrary to the covenant He made with them. The text shows God’s position in reminding the people of what He did in past and promised to do more if the people would remain obedient to His divine instructions.
The merciful and compassionate God does not want anyone to be destroyed because we are His works. Hence He continued to warn them of those things that could make Him angry. God’s anger, as we are told, is like the roaring waves of the sea and He is a consuming fire, even a jealous God (Deut. 4:24; Exo 24:17;Deut. 9:3, Heb. 12:29). It is only a stubborn and evil person who refuses to ” take heed” when he is warned or corrected that will be consumed. Such a person, of course, deserves no mercy.
As the Israelites of old were warned, we, too, are being warned this day not to neglect God, nor move out of His presence or disobey His ordinances. As Children of God, we are encouraged not to forget our Maker, not to take His words for granted, but absolutely to remain firm in His words and promises. Failure to do so always leads to rejection by God, and if care is not taken eternal death. Take great heed and it shall be well with your soul.
PRAYER: Lord, Jesus Christ, bless me today and grant me the divine enablement not to forget your place in my life. Amen.
