THEME: MYSTERY OF CHRIST’S TEACHINGS
PASSAGE: JOHN 7:6-16
6 Therefore Jesus told them, “The right time for me has not yet come; for you any time is right.
7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that what it does is evil.
8 You go to the Feast. I am not yet going up to this Feast, because for me the right time has not yet come.”
9 Having said this, he stayed in Galilee.
10 However, after his brothers had left for the Feast, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.
11 Now at the Feast the Jews were watching for him and asking, “Where is that man?”
12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”
13 But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the Jews.
14 Not until halfway through the Feast did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.
15 The Jews were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having studied?”
16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me.
What manner of man is Jesus? This was a question that permeated His ministry on earth. He was full of wonders and outstanding actions and statements that were different from those of the leaders of the Jews. This is one of the occasions in our passage today.
Demonstration of wisdom by Jesus since Age 12 has been unbearable to the Scribes and Pharisees and teachers of the law of His day. But the secret of this is revealed in verse 16, “So Jesus answered them: “My teaching is not mine, but His’ who sent Me”. He taught directly what the Father gave Him utterance to do. At another time, He said He did what He saw the Father doing. No wonder His actions and statements are beyond human comprehension.
This day I believe that the Lord wants to draw our attention to the question: Everything you have said or acted on behalf of God or in His Name, WHO SENT YOU? A lot of people speak in the name of God in our generation who themselves know they don’t have the mandate to say. They end up creating confusion in the church and the society.
Are you in the ministry to serve your belly? Are you an oracle of God? Jesus said greater than He did, we will do, but only on the condition that we have the mandate and we are sent by God.
Christ made it known to those whom He sent that the Counsellor, Holy Spirit, will teach them and remind them of His words to teach and observe. It is by the Holy Spirit- not by brilliancy nor academics nor intellectuality. You cannot give what you don’t have. Step not into territories you were not sent.
