THEME: Divine Mandate

PASSAGE: Ezekiel 3:16 – 27

HYMN: MHB 317 – WHOSOEVER heareth! Shout, shout the sound

MEMORY VERSE: Ezekiel 3:27 “But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth and you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’ Whoever will listen let him listen, and whoever will refuse let him refuse; for they are a rebellious house.”

Our passage today highlights God’s designation of Ezekiel as a “watchman” for Israel. The Lord said to Ezekiel “Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for Israel. Whenever you receive a message from Me, warn people immediately. If I warn the wicked, saying, ‘You are under the penalty of death,’ but you fail to deliver the warning, they will die in their sins and I will hold you responsible for their deaths. If you warn them and they refuse to repent and keep on sinning, they will die in their sins but you will have saved yourself because you obeyed Me’ (Ezek 3:17-19).

The Prophet had the mandate to watch for the safety of God’s people, Israel; preach for their edification, and pray for their eternal welfare. If he failed to warn the people, God would hold him responsible. If he warned the people and they refused to obey, they would die but he would be free.

Beloved, God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, has given us such divine mandate, “…As the Father has sent Me, so I am sending you” (John 20:21). “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations…” (Matthew 28:19).

We are saved so that God, through us will save others. You are a watchman to the people in your office, neighbourhood, family members, community, business partners, etc. If you do not tell them about Jesus, the Lord will require it from you. Do your part, bearing in mind that He said “I am with you even to end of the age.” God has appointed believers as watchmen to our nation and generation and we must stand upon our watch. We must not fail God in carrying out this divine mandate.

PRAYER: Father of Grace, I repent in all ways I have not been faithful as a watchman. Give me grace from today to hear from You and to speak as You direct in Jesus’ name. Amen.
