THEME: Obedience Brings Success
PASSAGE: Joshua 1:1-10
HYMN: 516: WHEN we walk with the Lord
MEMORY VERSE: Joshua 1:7 “Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you; turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.”
Many people are misled by thinking that success and prosperity come from having power, knowing influential persons, and relentless desire to go ahead. But the strategy of getting prosperity that God instructed Joshua was different. He said that to succeed, Joshua must be obedient to God’s law.
Do you know that people still doubt how obedience is equated to success? For many did not yet know that one success can be a controlling hub to others. In other words, obedience is a controlling factor or hub for many successes in life. Peter in Luke 4:1-11 proved the reality of this axiom when he quipped “Master, we have toiled all nights and caught nothing; nevertheless at your word I will let down the net.” This little obedience brought a huge success to Peter.
When Adoniram Judson graduated from college and seminary he received a call from a fashionable church in Boston to become its assistant pastor. Everyone congratulated him. His mother and sister rejoiced that he could live at home with them and do his life work, but Judson shook his head. “My work is not here,” he said, “God is calling me beyond the seas. To stay here, even to serve God in His ministry, I feel would be only partial obedience, and I could not be happy in that.” Although it cost him a great struggle, he left his mother and sister to follow the heavenly call.
Judson’s churches in Burma had fifty thousand converts, and the influence of his consecrated life is felt around the world.
Obedience brings success and the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. Dig deep into God’s Word before you walk away from blessings today.
PRAYER: Our heavenly Father, give me that listening ear and an obedient heart to abide by Your leading alone through Christ our Lord. Amen.
