PASSAGE: Mark 12:28-34

MESSAGE
A church had a special need to raise fund to assist an indigent child for medical surgery. People came to the front with their donations, but a young girl gave a ring. Later, the Pastor brought it back to her, but she said, “I gave it to the Lord, not to you.” That ring was the costliest thing that the young girl had and she sacrificed it for love, in order to save the life a little child.
Sacrifice entails offering something valuable for something considered more important or for a deity. In our text today, Jesus told the scribe that the great commandment, which indeed, includes all, is that of loving God with all our hearts, our soul mind and strength. However, loving God with all our heart will engage us in everything by which He will be pleased.
Christ encouraged the man that love for God and the love for neighbours are more than sacrifice and offering. Though they involve offering and sacrifices; they go beyond that to the level of relationship, fellowship and communion. Any sacrifice and offering not based on love is ritual and any sacrifice that transcends ritual is communion.
In John 3:16 God sets a pattern of true love, which is the basis of all love relationships. God gave His only Son, because of His love for mankind. This love also made Jesus accept our punishment, paid the price of our sins, and then offered us a new life.
Let your offering and sacrifice be born out of love and, by so doing, it will be an acceptable sacrifice which is pleasing to the Lord. When you love someone dearly, you are willing to give freely to the point of self-sacrifice.
PRAYER: Give me the grace and strength to always give You and my neighbours sincerely from the heart of love, in Jesus’ name. Amen
