Are you a Fan or a Follower? A Fan is a supporter. A Follower is devoted.
While they are very similar, there’s still a difference. The difference is in the heart and the relationship – one is lukewarm and the other is double-minded.
Fans of Jesus will think He is cool and while they might like what He has done, there will be no conversion. A Follower is one who will stop what they’ve been doing and follow. Matthew 16:24 “Then Jesus told His disciples; If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, pick up his cross and follow me”.
Followership is ‘Death’ (not literally) but death to pride, death to self, death to selfish desires, lust, sin, etc. It is interesting to know that this Pandemic – Covid-19, which has caused quite a stir all over the world has sieved out fans of Jesus from His true followers.
A fan would only support you in your winning season when everything is good and all seems to be perfect, but a true follower is one who has pledged allegiance, one who is out to be a true soldier and has vowed to die at His post.
In a time where fear is being spread at home and abroad, a true follower understands that the one who he models after has not given him the spirit of fear but of love, power, and a sound mind.
With church building doors shutting all over the world, a fan withdraws his support, because all he knows is that the Church is the place of gathering with other fans like himself, but a follower understands that the Church is beyond the walls of an edifice.
The church is us.
In the same vein, if people gather to hear you preach but never change, you are raising fans and not disciples.
True Christianity is Followership/Discipleship. True Followership is Death!
The question again is: are you a Fan or a Follower?
