THEME: Beware of Dream Killers
PASSAGE: Genesis 37:12–36
HYMN: MHB 491 – CHRISTIAN, seek not yet repose
MEMORY VERSE: Genesis 37: 20 – Come, therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘some wild beasts have devoured him! We shall see what will become of his dreams!’
Frances Jane Van Alstyne (Fanny Crosby), one of the most prolific hymnist in history was blind at the age of six weeks when a quack doctor treated her in the absence of the family doctor who was out of town. It would have appeared as if nothing good could become of her after that incident. Fanny Crosby, however, grew up to become a mission worker, poet, lyricist and composer, writing more than 8,000 hymns and gospel songs, with more than 100 million copies printed. Some of her popular hymns include ‘Safe in the Arms of Jesus’ and ‘To God be the glory.” She died at the ripe old age of 95 years.
Joseph was hated by his brothers for sharing with them his dream of becoming great. To ‘kill’ his dream, they conspired to kill him but eventually sold him into slavery, thinking that any chance of his dream becoming a reality was destroyed (Gen. 37: 12 – 36). God, however, used this evil plot as part of His script to make the story of Joseph’s life an awesome one. Joseph, a foreigner, became a governor in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh and used the position to save his family and set the stage for the incubation and birth of the nation called Israel.
Those who believe in their hearts that they have killed your dream are in for a big surprise. God is going to use what currently seems to be a bad situation as stepping stone to greater heights and victory for you in Jesus’ name.
Keep your dream alive. Run away from evil or any appearance of evil as Joseph did in the house of Portiphar (Gen. 39:1-12). God is more than able to fulfil your dream-only be obedient to His word.
PRAYER: Lord, save me from dream killers. Let any plot to destroy my dream become the vehicle that I will ride to the destiny You have for me in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
