THEME: Assurance of God’s Support
PASSAGE: Zechariah 4:1-14
HYMN: MHB 504 -LEAVE God to order all thy ways
MEMORY VERSE: Haggai 2:5 “This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And My Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.”
When the divine project is handled carnally, divine assurance of God’s support can be slim or absent completely.
Our text today presents a definite message of assurance from God via Prophet Zechariah to Zerubbabel, the governor of Jerusalem, who had started to rebuild the Temple (Zechariah 4:6a, Ezra 3:2; Hag 1:1, 2:23). This task appeared like a mountain, more so that this project was abandoned for well over 16 years. Moves to continue with the project had been a herculean task.
God quickly came into the scene to dislodge Zerubbabel’s fear that ”It is not by might nor by power but by the Spirit of the Lord” (Zech 4:6b). He simply told Zerubabbel to pick the capstone and cry ‘Grace! Grace!!’ and the building will be set in place. This indicates God’s favour firmly standing behind the successful completion of the building.
God’s message to Zerubabbel is also a great lesson for us today to remind us that our human effort without the Holy Spirit will be an exercise in futility. Our Lord Jesus Christ states emphatically”— that without Him, we can do nothing” (John 15:5c).
What project are you embarking upon? Is it the building of your spiritual life, house, training of your children, going on a business trip or academic pursuit? You need divine guidance and support. Moses said if God will not go with him, he would not move (Exo 33:15).
Beloved, the Holy Spirit alone provides power for the church. It is futile to attempt to do Christian ministry without the Holy Spirit. The beginning may be small but it will become great if God is in it (Zech 4:10). If what we are doing is in accordance with God’s will, He will surely give His backing and success will be sure.
PRAYER: Lord, Help me to trust in Your support for my life and ministry, and to continually witness the assurance of Your presence in whatever I do in Jesus’ name. Amen.
