FRIDAY 16TH OCTOBER, 2020
THEME: Saved by Grace
PASSAGE: Titus 3:3-7
HYMN: MBH 356- GREAT God of wonders! all Thy ways…
MEMORY VERSE: Titus 3:5. He saved us. It was not because of any good deeds that we ourselves had done, but because of his own mercy that he saved us, through the Holy Spirit, who gives us a new birth and new life by washing us.
Imagine you are half a million naira in debt. Someone comes to you and writes out a cheque for N500,000, saying, “This is all for you to cancel your debt. You don’t have to do anything but reach out and take it, and it’s yours.” So you take the money and pay your debt. You are now debt-free and totally free from the heavyweight of debt.
What do you have to boast about? Can you talk about a favour you did for someone, taking all that troublesome money off his hands? Of course not! You received grace—nothing more, nothing less. You were impoverished; you received riches from another person. The fact that you are now debt-free is a hundred percent due to your benefactor and, zero per cent due to you.
Who, then, deserves the praise and glory for your salvation? Clearly, not you! You have received riches from the resources of God. His grace made it all possible.
All of us were enslaved to sin with no hope of ever gaining freedom. In mercy and compassion, Jesus gave His life for us, purchasing our salvation by shedding His blood on the cross. We are now free from sin, but that freedom does not mean that we do whatever we want. Instead we are to live how Jesus wants us to live.
“But God, being rich in mercy . . . even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ” (Ephesians 2:4-5). We owe our new life—our new birth—to the mercy of God.
May God give us eyes to see that nothing could make us humbler and happier than the truth that we have been born again through the efforts of Jesus Christ. Amen.
PRAYER: Father, thank You for saving me by grace; please never let your grace run out in my life. Amen.
