THEME: THE DANGER OF FORSAKING GOD
PASSAGE: DEUTERONOMY 29:14-29
MEMORY VERSE: Deuteronomy 29:28 “And the LORD uprooted them from their land in anger and fury and great wrath, and cast them into another land, as at this day.”
HYMN: MHB 468 (18.104.22.168.6.6.4.)-NEARER, my God, to Thee.
During their slavery in Egypt and wanderings in the wilderness, the Israelites had observed the idols that were worshipped by other nations (Deut. 29:16-17) and had been tempted to get involved in the act of worshipping such idols (Num. 25). Moses stressed that such idols were made of wood, stone, or metal and works of men. He pointed out that the desire to worship them was like the root of a plant that will produce only poisonous fruits when grown (Deut. 29:18; 32:32).
The type of person who is tempted into idolatry may listen to the recital of the blessings but ignore the curses accompanying the covenant, thinking that he/she would be saved. Such an attitude can lead only to disaster, for idolatry can bring destruction to the individuals and the nation at large. The seriousness of this disobedience is that God will never pardon the offender and that His wrath and zeal will burn against those that forsake Him (29:20). Such people will suffer all the curses written in the Book of Deuteronomy and will incur the disaster of forsaking God (29:20-21).
Moses reminded the Israelites of what the land will be when all the curses in the Book of the law (Deuteronomy 29:22-28) come into effect. It would be as sins thoroughly destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 19).
We are not to worry ourselves about the secret things, which are God’s concern. Instead, we are to concentrate on what has been revealed to us, particularly the Commandments, laws, statutes and precepts as given in the Bible, and we are to make sure that we and our descendants live in accordance with what we do know of God’s Will. God always makes His ways known to men so that they may not go astray. It is for us humans to obey them and live. Anything short of obedience is death.
PRAYER: Merciful and Everlasting Father, let me not forsake You and Your Word when it is easy or not and hold me with Your hand of Righteousness to the end in Jesus’ name. Amen.
