FRIDAY 26TH FEBRUARY, 2021
THEME: CONFESS AND BE FORGIVEN
PASSAGE: PSALM 32: 1-5
MEMORY VERSE: 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
HYMN: MHB 377 (S.M.) -HOW can a sinner know.
A number of different words are used to describe sin in Psalm 32:1-2. It is a transgression, which means a rebellion against God. The Word translated as sin means missing the mark”, or failing to reach the true goal in life. It is also referred to as iniquity (RSV), that is, inner corruption. It is also known as deceit, which is something dishonest and insincere.
Someone who has realized his or her sin but has not turned from it cannot find peace of mind. They suffer distress, lose energy and feel as drained as one does in hot dry summer (Ps. 32:3-4). But what a change when that person does as the Psalmist does in 32:5 and turns from all dishonesty, sincerely confesses the sin to God and repents of it! Then the transgression is forgiven, a word that implies that a burden is lifted.
Sins are covered (Ps.32:1) so that the forgiving Lord sees them no more. The Lord no longer counts the wrongdoing against the sinner (Ps. 32:2). Nothing brings greater peace and joy in life than enjoying God’s forgiveness. Such a person is blessed, that is, he is made holy, sacred or like being in paradise or favoured by God.
Apostle Paul quoted Psalm 32:1-2 in Romans 4:7-8 where he sets out the good news that God offers us forgiveness because of the sin-bearing sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross so that our sins are covered and we are no longer considered guilty of them. The Words of John (1 John 1:8-9) are also relevant. It is very certain that when we confess our sins to God Almighty, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
It is sad that many people often fail to confess their sins, thinking that nobody knows. If nobody knows, the All-knowing God knows! Sin is like cancer which needs to be removed before it does a lot of damage to one’s life.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, blot out my transgressions and pardon me for my wrongdoings. Create in me a new heart to know You and never to go back to sin anymore, in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
