MEMORY VERSE: Numbers 11:17 “I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the power of the spirit that is on you and put it on them. They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone.”
HYMN: MHB 357 ( – JESUS, in whom the weary find.
The word “burden” is used in five different ways in the Bible: (i) load (ii) responsibility (iii) cares of life (iv) bondage (v) judgment. As used in the passage, it means sharing of responsibility or duties.
One of the major reasons God created Eve for Adam was to be his helper and to help him share and bear his burden. God’s love for us is so great that He would always make provision for burden bearers around us, just as in the case of Moses in the passage read today. When the whole company of Israel came to him crying and wailing for meat, Moses was overwhelmed by this challenge and he went to God complaining of not being able to shoulder the burden anymore.
In Exodus 18: 14-27, Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, advised him to share responsibility if he (Moses) was not to wear away. Jesus Christ also chose disciples to share His responsibility as partners to go and bring forth fruit; to baptize and preach the gospel.
What is that burden, weighing down your soul? What is that burden that seems too heavy for you to carry?
The good news is that God cares and He is the burden sharer. Jesus said in Matthew 11: 28, “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Just cast those burdens upon Him, and He will send burden-bearer to you as He did for Moses. He appointed seventy elders from among the people and put the spirit of Moses upon them, so they could relieve Moses of shouldering the responsibility of the Israelites in the wilderness. One interesting thing here is that this was the beginning of the Jewish Council known as the Sanhedrin, while Moses served as the first Head of State of Israel as a nation.
Your relief is on the way, just trust God for help.
PRAYER: God Almighty, connect me with my burden bearer, in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
