THEME: THE PERFECT CIRCUMCISION
PASSAGE: ROMANS 2:17-29
MEMORY VERSE: Roman 2:29 “No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.”
HYMN: MHB 378 (C.M.) – ETERNAL Sun of Righteousness.
Circumcision refers to the sign of God’s special covenant with His people. Submitting to this rite was required for all Jewish males (Genesis 17:9-14). According to Paul, being a Jew (that is, being circumcised) meant nothing if the person didn’t obey God’s laws. On the other hand, the Gentiles, who are regarded as uncircumcised, would receive God’s love and approval if they kept the law’s requirements. Paul goes on to explain that a real Jew (one who pleases God) is not someone who has been circumcised (outwardly) but someone whose heart is right with God and who obeys Him (inward circumcision).
Paul, in the passage, vehemently attacked the Jews as being hypocritical. They do what they accuse the others (the Gentiles) of doing. He told them that God would readily accept the Gentile who obeys His commands while the Jews who called themselves the children of God would be doomed.
Paul made it clear that membership of the family of God is based on internal, not external qualities. All whose hearts are right with God are real Jews. Attending church or being baptized, confirmed, and accepted for membership is not enough. Submitting to physical circumcision was not enough for the Jews but God desires our heartfelt devotion and obedience, he argued.
If we claim to be one of God’s people, then our lives should reflect what God is like. When we disobey God, we dishonour His name. Perfect circumcision is the circumcision of the heart by the Spirit rather than being subjected to written laws or codes. Obedience to God’s will, which is inward circumcision, is what God likes.
PRAYER: Lord, circumcise my heart by the power of Your Holy Spirit, and make me live in obedience to Your will evermore. Amen
