WEDNESDAY 31TH MARCH, 2021 (HOLY WEDNESDAY)
THEME: THE STANDARD FOR A GODLY RULER
PASSAGE: DEUTERONOMY 17:14-20
MEMORY VERSE: Deuteronomy 17:19 “It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to fear the Lord, his God, and follow carefully all the words of this law and this decrees”
HYMN: MHB 622 (18.104.22.168.10.10.)– SHOW me the way, O Lord.
A Standard could be a principle, example or measure used for comparison. In Deut 17: 14-20, God set a rule which every ruler of His people must follow. Israel adopted a monarchical system of government after 400 years of operating under a theocracy. God forewarned them by setting a standard that would make them distinct from other nations.
“You will surely set a king whom the LORD will choose among your brethren and not a foreigner.” This implies that an unbeliever is not approved by God to be a leader (1Timothy 3: 6-7).
The king should not multiply horses and lead you back to Egypt.
He must not marry many wives so that his heart will not turn away. Adultery leads to idolatry. A leader should marry only one wife or husband (1Timothy 3: 2-5).
He must not multiply wealth (silver and gold). Godliness with Contentment is a great gain (1Timothy 6:6).
He should read the law all the days of his life so that he may learn to fear the LORD; The king or ruler must obey the law and statutes, and practically do them so that his days and those of his children may be long.
This standard is for every leader, whether in the family, Church or any area of the society within Christendom. Christ the King of kings lived as a man, but He never lorded Himself on others. Unfortunately, even Church leaders now multiply wives and wealth. No wonder, ungodliness flows like rivers in our time and leaders reproduce their likes. However, no ungodliness will enter heaven. Imagine the agony of hellfire that awaits ungodly rulers (Rev 21:8, 27). Their judgments will be severe because they ignored the standard. Repent today, keep the godly standard.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus! Grant us the grace to keep Your standard as leaders, and let our actions win souls for You. Amen.
