THEME: GIVE LITTLE AND GET MORE
PASSAGE: MATTHEW 14:13-23
MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 14:20 “So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained”.
HYMN: MHB 399 (C.M.) -WHAT shall I render to my God.
Have you experienced a child offering someone his/her most precious toy or possession in an act of pure selflessness? Those moments make a parent proud, but they are also gentle reminders to us all that material possessions in this world matter very little. Matthew 14:13-23 reminds us with the Words of Christ that when you give little at times, you can get more with God’s blessing. Just five loaves of bread and two fishes were used to feed five thousand men excluding women and children! God is wonderful!
In understanding the covenant and reality of giving, God determines the by-product of the blessings. We are called to serve one another as Christ instructed in the scripture. People who serve others genuinely in some capacity are healthier, more fulfilled and happier.
In giving of our possessions and ourselves we must all beware of certain pitfalls. When you give, make sure you do so out of love and the goodness of your heart and not because you expect something in return or want to be seen doing something good or to please yourself and others. In present-day Christian attitude, many are guilty of this external motivation. Acts 20:35 reminds us that it is more blessed to give than to receive.
Below are examples of those who gave liberally in the Bible. Abraham entertained the Angels of God and he got the due date for the birth of Isaac (Gen. 18:1-15). In 1Kings 17:7-16, the widow of Zarepath fed Prophet Elijah and her jar of flour and jug of oil did not run dry till there was rain in Israel. The woman in Matthew 26:7-13 poured expensive oil on Jesus’ head and we are celebrating her good deed till today.
Beloved brother/sister, all these and more are kind gestures that you can do to people to attract God’s blessings. He is never unmindful of whatever we give Him or fellow human beings and He will reward us bountifully.
PRAYER: Almighty God, grant me the attitude and spirit of giving even in desperate situations, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
