THEME: PATTERN OF GOOD WORK
PASSAGE: TITUS 2:1-10
MEMORY VERSE: Titus 2:7 “In all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility.”
HYMN: MHB 710 (L.M.) – BRETHREN in Christ, and well-beloved.
Apostle Paul, in our text today, gave some charges to Titus, a convert and a fellow-worker, on how and what to instruct people in the church. When he got to young men, he said they should be a pattern of good works (verse 7). We discussed some days back, where we saw that our good works are practical realities of the love of God demonstrated.
Today, we need to draw our attention to the word pattern, which qualifies good works. Beloved, the import of this is that, your life is supposed to be consistent with your good works and your good works are supposed not to be off and on (sporadic or spotted in nature).
As a pattern of good works, you are known for good works in character, words, and specific action. There should be no situation that your personality that will be in doubt or inversely related to your good works. Sometimes, people will say, it was that man that helped them, but others that really know the person, will say: “No, it can’t be him”. Why? He has never exhibited or reflected any pattern of good works with such testifiers. The good work of that person might also be selective and occasional. But God is calling us to consistency.
Circumstances of life should not change you from doing good; when it is convenient and when it is not convenient. You just find yourself doing good by nature and deliberate action.
We are expected to be obedient, people of integrity, reverent, incorruptible, temperate, chaste, discreet, and sound in spiritual things. By these, people will see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven (Matt. 5:16). Therefore, be a pattern that we can follow and can be recommended by the Lord to the world.
PRAYER: Gracious Father, I long to be like You in the pattern of Your consistent love and goodness. Make me a pattern of good works in Jesus’ name. Amen.
