THEME: REMEMBER PAST GOODNESS
PASSAGE: 2 SAMUEL 9: 6-11
MEMORY VERSE: 2 Samuel 9:7“Don’t be afraid David said, I intend to show kindness to you and because of my promise to your father Jonathan, I will give you all the property that once belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will eat here at the King’s table.”
HYMN: MHB 717(C.M.) – HELP us to help each other, Lord.
Despite the fact that King Saul made several attempts to kill David so that he would not succeed him as a king in Israel, David never retaliated. After the death of King Saul and his son, Jonathan, David considered showing goodness to “the house of Saul.” Note that David did not say to the house of Jonathan, his bosom friend, but Saul, who chose to be his arch-enemy. This is no doubt a spirit of compassion and love. It is a Godlike spirit that every child of God must exhibit (Matthew 5:44).
But most times we tend to forget the gratitude and some obligations we owe, not only to our friends but also to God Himself. However, godly people will not rest till they have fulfilled their obligations. One of such men was David. Jonathan was David’s friend and he showed kindness to Jonathan’s son as he had promised.
It is said that many people soon forget those who helped them in their hours of need or trouble. Some in exalted positions use the positions to oppress their supposed enemies. David said he wanted to show mercy to the house of Saul and eventually helped Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, his dear friend. He restored all the land and all that pertained to late King Saul to Mephibosheth. This is an act of goodness, which made David be a man after God’s own heart.
God is faithful to us; let us not be unfaithful to one another. If providence raised us and our friends and their families are brought low, we must look upon that as giving us the fairer opportunity of being kind to them. “One good turn deserves another,” is a popular saying, and we must constantly remember this in our daily lives.
PRAYER: Lord, help me to always remember Your goodness and be good to fellow human beings in Jesus’ name.
