MESSAGE
Being loyal is defined as “being faithful to one’s oath, engagements or obligations. In the Bible, the concept of loyalty is purely relational, which means, our whole life is thoroughly committed to someone (Joshua 24:15). God established the essence of loyalty through His covenant relationship with His people in Deuteronomy 7:9. Through His covenant, God’s people are assured of His never-ending love from which no Believer can ever be separated – (Romans 8:35-39).
Such loyalty is expressed to us in both divine and human realms as given to us in the first of the two commandments: love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your mind and with all your soul and with all your strength” (Mark 12:29-31). John Wesley, the father of Methodism, said, “I saw that giving even all my life to God (supposing it possible to do this and go no further) would profit me nothing unless I gave my heart, yeah all my heart to Him.” This implies that we cannot claim that we are loyal to God unless we give all our total being to God.
Paul emphasized seriously the importance of a servant’s loyalty to his Master. In our passage, He feels that everyone has abandoned him. He condemned two specific people who were disloyal to him as the leader of the Church. Those two men, Phygelus and Hermogenes harmed Paul and the Gospel. When we talk of sharing the gospel, there are two qualities that Paul emphasized in the life of Timothy as a Leader. We need to have confidence, be steadfast and loyal to Christ as our Master to maintain a better relationship with Him. As we celebrate the effective and loyal lives of John and Charles Wesley today, let us also say in the words of John Wesley, “Lord, grant that I may never be useless!”
PRAYER: Oh faithful Father, grant me the grace to keep to Thy faith, maintain loyalty to Christ my Master now and all the days of my life. Amen.
