THEME: THE ENEMY HAS A ROLE TO PLAY
PASSAGE: JUDGES 3:1-11
MEMORY VERSE: Judges 3:4 “And they were to prove Israel by them to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the Lord …”
HYMN: MHB 476 (220.127.116.11.D.) – FROM trials unexempted.
The partial conquest of Canaan by Joshua was part of God’s plan for two reasons: (i) to test the Israelites and (ii) to teach them how to fight in warfare. God left some nations like the Philistines, the Sidonians, the Syrians, Moabites, etc to dwell around them as “a test” to see whether His people, Israel, would break or ignore the covenant He signed with their forefathers – Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, etc. Those nations became thorns in the Israelites’ flesh in future years.
The enemies of Christians are the devil, the world, and the flesh, which makes them sin. The moment you decide to follow Christ, Satan would always feel defeated and become angry. Satan’s role as an enemy will be to discourage and confuse you, divert your focus, fight to dilute your testimony and his entire attempt will be to destroy your relationship with Christ and your influence upon others. He did it with David; he did it in the life of Job. He tempted our Lord, Jesus Christ, and Judas Iscariot.
The role of the world as the secondary enemy is the tendency to lead you into sin, evil companions, pleasures, fashions, opinions, and aims. 1John 2:15 warns that the world and the lust thereof shall pass away, but he that doeth the will of God abides forever. As Christians, we must stand out like gold against any rough background.
The old nature cannot please God. If you go through Verses 8 and 9 of our text, you will understand that when the people of Israel committed sin, God turned His back against them. The good news, however, is that in Verses 9 down to 11, God heard their cry immediately they repented, and provided a deliverer for them. We can make bold to say that the role of the enemy is to pull Christians down but the believer must be strong, steadfast, and seek God always, to overcome all the wiles of the devil. Resist the enemy and he will flee.
PRAYER: O Lord, endow me with the grace and power to overcome all the enemies of my life and stand strong in my Christian race, in Jesus’ name. Amen
