MONDAY 23RD AUGUST, 2021
THEME: INVITATION TO COMFORT
PASSAGE: ISAIAH 55: 1-4
MEMORY VERSE: Galatians 6:15 “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.”
HYMN: MHB 453 (188.8.131.52.184.108.40.206.) – O MY Saviour, hear me.
The word “buy” (verse 1 of our text) ordinarily means “to purchase.” Your purchase with money or exchange for money. The word is metaphorical. Here, God is making an appeal through Prophet Isaiah to the exiles in Babylon to come to a place of comfort, a place of plenty, a place of safety – Jerusalem. There is no place like home of course.
In the gathering or fellowship of believers, they are not immune from the challenges or problems that occur daily. Such occurrences as the death of loved ones, health or financial challenges do make sorrow and tears run down our cheeks. When such occurs the admonition of Paul in 2Cor. 1:3-4 comes into mind.
When sorrowful experiences happen, the believers rely on the love and strength of fellow believers who surround each other and offer consolation and comfort.
This comes from a compassionate heart to overcome such a period of challenge in their lives. That is why Prov. 18:10 states that the name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous runs to it and is safe.
When the Lord gathers His people, He envelopes them with His love. The same love of Christ is shared among God’s people. The Lord invites us to find comfort in His love and among His people for the stability of our spiritual and physical well-being.
With such comfort the believer finds in the house of God and among His people, such negative reactions as suicide, depression or even loneliness is taken care of and we find comfort in our time of trouble. We can then like in Ps 119:76, say “May your unfailing love be my comfort.”
PRAYER: Lord, uphold me and let me not go back into slavery to my old selfish desires.
