TEXT: 1 PETER 2:1-20
MEMORY VERSE: 1 PETER 2: 20 “For credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God”.

Before a man and a woman can decide to marry, there are traits which they will see in each other to unite them. Similarly, two people cannot agree to do business together if their interests are not the same or if they are enemies. The Bible says “Can two walk together, unless they agree?” (Amos 3:3). Before Angels can rejoice over you and have your name written in the Book of Life, there are traits which you must have to please God. The trait of pleasing God is what identifies you to be a child of God, a regenerated or born-again person.

The text enumerates the characteristics that should not be part of a child of God. They are malice, deception, hypocrisy, envy, evil speaking (1 Pet. 2:1; Gal 5:19-21). The Bible calls all these works of the flesh. And those who have these traits will not enter the Kingdom of God (Galatians 5:21).

What can make a man or woman to please God is the desire to feed on the Word of God constantly (1 Pet. 2: 2). The Word of God is the change agent God has given to man. After Peter preached in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost, the people were pricked in their conscience and were moved to ask Peter what they needed to do to be saved (Acts 2: 38ff; Also read Jos. 1: 8-9, Ps. 119: 9, 11 and 105). The Word reveals what God wants from you to do for your spouse (Eph. 5: 22; 28), employers, and employees (I Tim. 5: 18), members of the Church to their Minister (I Cor. 9: 11), citizens to leaders (I Tim. 2: 1–3), etc. The acts of goodness done to your fellow human being are done to please God, too.

PRAYER: Father, give me a sincere faith through Your Word to please You in my relationship with others in Jesus’ name. Amen

TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 12:1-27; PSALM 133:1-3
MEMORY VERSE: MATTHEW 18: 18 – 19 “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.”

There is a popular saying, ‘Together we stand, divided we fall’. In the coat of Arms of Nigeria, it is boldly inscribed “Unity and Progress.” The import of these two illustrations is that where there is no unity, there cannot be progress no matter the level of wisdom, knowledge, wealth and power applied.

The analogy of Paul on the relationship of the body of Christ to make fellowship bring glory to God is that all members have to make use of their spiritual gifts. There is no gift that is not important in the fellowship. All gifts have to work harmoniously to engender progress.

When Christians work together, there will be uncommon spiritual and physical achievement such as:
Presence of the Holy Spirit in their gathering;
God will answer their prayers speedily;
Signs, miracles and wonders will attend their worship;
Satan will not have the opportunity to deceive members;
Unspeakable joy will always fill their heart;
The works of the flesh will not manifest;
No member of the Church will be in want;
Revelation of God’s hidden treasure will be constant;
There will infrastructural growth, and
There will be evidence of numerical growth.

The unity which God expects in the Church has to begin from the family between husband and wife, parents and children, and among workers either as preachers, choir members, ushers, stewards and this has to radiate between Minister and all the members of the Church. It is unity that will make worship acceptable to God and make His glory to manifest as God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are working in unity (Gen. 1: 26; Jn. 5: 17).

PRAYER: Lord God, remove the spirit of disunity from the body of Christ in Jesus’ name. Amen.

TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 3:1 – 11
MEMORY VERSE: MATTHEW 14: 28 – 29 “And Peter answered Him and said, Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water. So He said, come. And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.”

When God calls, it is always for an important assignment which must be done without delay. From time immemorial, God has been calling human beings to be His mouthpiece, either to an individual, a group of people or nation for the purpose of preventing His wrath being ‘kindled’ against them. The call of God came to Samuel at his tender age when he was in the “theological school” at Shiloh under Eli. The call came to him at night and the voice was audible (I Sam. 3: 3). Samuel was young in age and faith to the extent that he could not differentiate the Voice of God from that of Eli. One of the reasons he did not know that it was God that was calling was that the revelation of God was rare. When Eli perceived at the third call that it was God calling Samuel, he told him to answer “Lord, speak for Thy servant heareth.” The Lord then delivered a message of doom to Eli and he gave it as the Lord told him.

The call of God can be through dreams, still small voice, trance or vision or listening to homily. The call of God is for a specific purpose, Jesus Christ, in the Great Commission of Matthew 28:18-20 calls all Christians and not only His apostles to evangelise. What do you do when God calls? Take the call like Moses who complained several times with flimsy excuses or like Isaiah who said ‘Here I am, Lord, send me’ or like Jonah who ran away from the presence of God? Are you still occupied with the things of the world? Delaying or rejecting the call of God always attracts punishment. Heed the call of God like Isaiah (Isa. 6: 8), Jeremiah (Jer. 1: 4 – 5), Paul Acts (9: 11: 16), or like our own John Wesley. One thing is certain: When God calls a person, He always backs up the person with everything he/she needs to succeed.

PRAYER: Lord God, give me that amazing grace to recognize Your voice when You call me in Jesus’ name.

MEMORY VERSE: JOHN. 8:32 “And you shall know the Truth and the Truth shall set you free.

The word ‘Truth’ in the Bible is different from honesty and faithfulness. Truth is personified in Jesus Christ. All the words He said are true. In life situations, there is nothing that can set man free like the Truth. There is a maxim that Truth is always constant like the Northern Star. Having and believing in the Truth set one’s path on the way of success and great achievement.

Paul stresses the fact of the law that came through Moses. The law became the school teacher in religion. Where there is no law there is no sin. But law lacks the power to set man free because it cannot take man to the point of Truth. The Truth appeared when the “fullness of the time” came in person of Jesus. Jesus came to fulfil the law and in Him man is set free.

Are you struggling with doubt, unbelief, fear of what tomorrow may bring, discouragement, disappointment? I admonish you to embrace Jesus, the all-wise and all-knowing God, who is the embodiment of Truth. He knows the way and has the power over all that troubles your mind. He knows the end from the beginning. He has passed through this world and experienced all the situations that you struggle with, even worse situations than yours. All these He went through, not because of His own freedom but for you to be set free. Remember Jesus was betrayed by His closet disciple, Judas Iscariot. King David was also betrayed by his adviser, Ahithophel, and his son, Absalom, waged war against him! Have you been deceived by people with sugar-coated mouth? Remember the temptation of Jesus by Satan. I counsel you, have the Truth and He will set you free and give you the discerning spirit.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, set my feet and heart on the path of truth always in Jesus’ name

MEMORY VERSE: ECCLESIASTES 11:1 “Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.”

The life God has given us to live is about giving willingly. He demonstrated this with the Oxygen and Carbon dioxide we breathe in and out. The natural resources that we explore through the knowledge of science and technology to make life worth living are free gifts of God.

The writer of Ecclesiastes admonishes that one of the habits to cultivate is giving willingly because what you give will return back in folds. He illustrates the certainty of having the blessing of God that just as nature cannot fail, likewise the person who casts his “bread upon the waters” will be blessed in due season. Giving (willingly) that brings blessing is when you intentionally give to the work of God such as evangelism, helping the needy, orphans, the less-privileged and widows. In the Bible, those who gave willingly were not in want and God always met them at the points of their need such as the widow of Shuname (II Kgs. 4:8–10; 14 – 17). The name of a willing giver will always be remembered (Matt. 26: 8 – 13). Giving is receiving and givers never lack. Those who give willingly without any compulsion get more blessings in return.

Liberal giving is showing the height of love you have for the person being given. David, Arauna, Solomon, Queen of Sheba, the Magi, etc, are examples of people who gave willingly in scriptures, and they were blessed for it. Do so, too. But think of it, do you give willingly or until you are persuaded by your Minister, Class leader, President or Secretary of your Society? Jesus taught Christians to give willingly because it attracts God’s blessings. They shall be like a watered garden that never fails.

PRAYER: Lord, the giver of all good things, give me the spirit to give willingly for the advancement of Your Kingdom on earth in Jesus name I pray.

TEXT: ISAIAH 58:1-14
MEMORY VERSE: ISAIAH 58:6 & 8 “Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? Then your light shall break forth like the morning, your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.”

Fasting is a religious obligation practised in almost all religions of the world. It is a religious exercise to bring the body into subjection and be in tune with the spirit by abstaining from food and drink for a specific period. It is the right tool to engender the spirit of prayer in a Christian and record positive results. It is the secret of answered prayers, too.

In the text, the people of Judah increased the number of their fasting when they returned from Babylonian exile with the hope that God would answer their prayers speedily. They, indeed, prayed and fasted but God did not answer. God sent Prophet Isaiah to show them where they got it wrong: When they fasted they engaged themselves in mundane things such as exploiting their workers. They bore grudges against one another (Isa. 58: 3 – 4). They oppressed the poor and worshipped idols.

Christians believe in fasting and regard it a veritable tool for attaining a higher level of spiritual growth. Fasting also aids the spirit of prayer, but when you fast do you forsake the works of the flesh? Do you have a different attitude in your work? Do you use false measurement in trading? Do you falsify financial records? Do you give workers under your leadership their right? Do you not cheat in examinations? Remember you cannot be in sin and expect the grace of God to abound (Rom. 6:1–2). If you want your fasting and prayer life to be accepted by God and produce the desired results, you have to KILL the old man in you and allow the Spirit of Jesus Christ to take over your life. Fasting and praying are a way for you to surmount the spiritual mountains before you but they must be done in the Spirit of God to have the desired effect.

PRAYER: Lord, give me the grace to fast and pray aright to bring the devil under my feet and be a blessing to Your Church, the Community and humanity in Jesus name.

The inspiration behind the ‘SURGE’ is an outcry for the sudden powerful forward or upward movement of the Spirit of God all should feel deep within, one that has been sometimes called ‘reawakening of spirituality’.

‘SURGE’ is an almost six minutes of good music with great dynamics, ushered with sustained flowing lines and rich, resonant chords. It is an eclectic number that exudes evocative rhythmic intensity with a great sense of electric spark. It is easily relatable and with a reminiscent tempo and consistent rhythm; it is not out of place to say that the mood of the song was well played out.

The song has an interesting intro, one that is atmospheric and captures your imagination right from its start, it is an amazing Urban Pop-rock song with great energy. It establishes a good beat that sets up the song. The intro starts with an expressively stirring tone from the piano which was soon followed by an electrifying bass presence that helps to lead into the song naturally. The intro stands out and led well into the chorus of the song. The intro is so full of energy.

‘SURGE’ is required for a sudden reawakening of spirituality; restoration of dead areas, lost gifts and skills; destruction of stagnancy, redundancy and oppression in the path of the individual’s original purpose and destiny in God through Christ.

The song is tuneful and interesting. This exciting musical composition brings out a sense of vibrant energy with its brisk tempo and fiery rhythms. The snare drum upbeats and piano melody is effective and provides smooth linkages between sections. It is a rousing number that exudes rhythmic intensity and creates a haunting and eclectic sound. It is the kind of tune that would be easy to remember with a commercially positive and confident quality; it is not one song that you can get out of your head for days.

Obiwon’s vocal quality in this number is a rich tone that clearly expresses the lyrics of the song. The vocal quality of his backup singers are sharp as they may sound great and are comfortable with their high notes as the song climaxes.

Glowreeyah sings her verse with each sound and note sharply detached/separated from the others. Her voice resonated the essence of the song by adding more energy and smack.

The rich and resonant piano melody and the crisp and exact percussion soothes the scene throughout, as the main theme is somewhat developed. This composition would make for a good congregational revival worship song.

‘SURGE’, which also means Send. Us. Revival. Greatly and Exceedingly – is an expression of a spiritual force emphasising the intervention of the Spirit of God, which gives a great awakening and revival.

The song expressively relays the lyrics supported by great voice texture and vocal quality – the singers are comfortable with the high notes as the harmonisation was well served without going screechy.

Whilst there is a great, solid beat and strong engaging melody that grabs you and carries you along, the rhythmic effects are flowing, energetic and pronounced and at the same time, consistent and convincing too. The song has a rich variety of interesting and expressive instruments, quite distinctive and memorable. The arrangement is tasteful and suits the mood of the song.

The song is very expressive and the musical instruments used relayed the message of the song well. Obiwon and Glowreeyah’s rich voices and diminuendo made it electrifying yet interesting by varying the rhythm and dynamics, thereby ensuring that they avoided a boring mechanical strum throughout. The digital effects of the digital violin in this number is striking and really enhanced the song, thereby adding to its rich sound.

What is also striking is that the lyrics of the song is easy to make out. There is clarity of words and diction; easy flow of words with no confusion or unnecessary sematic noise. Obiwon chose words and phrases that are relatable with sound and natural rhythmic quality.

Inspired by a need for the intervention of the Spirit of God in the affairs of men with great signs and wonders in the politico-economic and socio-cultural spheres of the nations and in all sphere of human endeavour; a move that will bring in the harvests like never before in preparation for His imminent return, ‘SURGE’ is electric and engaging with original lyrics filled with life and energy.

The song ended on a soft note with the soft and soothing feel of the piano and the lead singers – it was conclusive.

Overall, the song is amazing with rich imagery and magnificent energy as the singers are natural, talented, professional and full of energy; the song is good to the ears.
