Daily Reflection: Character Counts- Tuesday 3rd July, 2018

TEXT: EXODUS 2:16-25
MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 5:16 “… let your light shine before others, so that they may see Your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
The character of every man will either be a crown or a reproach to his life. Whatsoever a man does, that he will reap. A tree is also known by its fruit. Moses had just murdered an Egyptian and fled from the palace of Pharaoh. He had no place to stay and wandered around till he got to Midian. Then some girls came with their flock but some other shepherds drove them away. Moses withstood the shepherds, but this time, he did not harm anyone of them. At least by the records we have, Moses earned himself a place in the heart of the girls’ father who invited him into his own tent, fed him, housed him and gave him one of his own daughters in marriage.

The character of Moses in that house must have impressed Reuel who was also called Jethro. How did Moses win the respect of Jethro? How could Jethro have brought a man he had not seen before into his own house? That was the result of good character. Most people today do not count on the value of character. Like Machiavelli, they use clever but immoral methods to get what they want. They say business and Christ-like behaviour do not go together! People always form an opinion about us from our behaviours. When we display the wrong side of the character, people keep them in their hearts. We inevitably write in the hearts and minds of people as we display our character. The most painful thing is that those who have not heard of Christ will always form an opinion of Him through us.

According to the world, whatever we do becomes what Christ is like to them because they only read the gospel of our lives. Give Christ a good name through your character in your compound, locality, place of work, everywhere you go. In the days when Scripture Union started like wildfire, police will only look at your face among many suspects and see that you are a Scripture Union member and allow you to go but can we find such again? Many so-called Christians have been held for armed robberies, corrupt practices, rape, kidnapping, etc. It should not be so.

PRAYER: Father, help me to imbibe Your character and let it affect others that the world may see Your glory in me all the days of my life in Jesus’ name. Amen.
