Daily Reflection: THE WAGES OF DECEIT – Friday 20th July, 2018

TEXT: PSALM 101:1-8
MEMORY VERSE: PSALM 101:7 – He who works deceit shall not dwell within
my house; He who tells lies shall not continue in my presence.
This Psalm 101 is David’s promised faithfulness to the Lord. David promised to sing praises to God, to behave wisely and serve God with a sincere heart. He pledged to treat the good citizens well while the wicked, liars and the deceitful will be destroyed. Indeed, on his death bed, King David instructed his son, Solomon, on how he should deal with people who had been good to him and the evil men in the city, including Joab, who used to be the captain of his army.

Deceitfulness is a misleading falsehood and a quality of being fraudulent. Friendships, partnerships and associations have been rent asunder due to deceitful words, acts and attitude. A major deceit in marriage today is infidelity where married men and women engage in extra-marital sex. It has destroyed many homes and caused great pains to those affected. Unscrupulous business people import fake drugs for adults and children, resulting in health complications and death. Importers bring in fake tyres with grave consequences and we are living witnesses of disasters caused by buildings constructed with sub-standard building materials.

Paul, in his letter to the Colossians, admonished us not to lie (Col. 3:9-10) Ananias and Sapphira his wife should have known better when they lied to Peter about the proceeds of the property they sold (Acts 5: 1-11). Peter told them that they did not lie to man but to God, the Holy Spirit. This shows the consequence of being deceitful in our dealings with God. The Omniscient God knows all things. We cannot worship Him with other gods. God has promised that in the New Jerusalem, “there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life” (Rev.21:27). Let us therefore put away lies and every manner of deceit from our relationships with man and God.

PRAYER: Lord, remove falsehood and lies far from me.
