Daily Relection: ACCORDING TO THE SPIRIT – Thursday 26th July, 2018

MEMORY VERSE: PROVERBS 20:27 – The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all the inner depths of his heart.

The Holy Spirit resides in us the moment we confess Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, manifests His presence through His fruit of the Spirit, (Galatians 5:22-23) and His presence makes the difference between our old self and the new creation that we become, in union with Christ.

Paul teaches that it is the indwelling Holy Spirit empowers Christians, to obey the Law’s righteous demands, “for what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh.” (Rom. 8:3). We walk according to the flesh when we follow the sinful desires of the old life and this leads, invariably, to death. Walking according to the Spirit is to follow the desires and dictates of the Holy Spirit and this leads to life eternal. The difference between a Christian and a non-believer is that when a Christian falls prey to the dictates of the flesh, the Holy Spirit convicts such Christian and prompts him to repent while the non-believer shows no remorse or contrition.

How well we allow the Holy Spirit to lead us determines how effective we live as Christians. We need the Holy Spirit to guide, inspire and empower us. The manifestation of His fruit in our lives makes the glory and beauty of God to shine forth in our lives such that people are drawn to the saving grace and knowledge of Christ through our speech, actions and attitude. Paul, in warning against grieving of the Holy Spirit by sexual immorality, asks, “Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” (1 Cor. 6:15).The world in which we live is filled with trials and temptations designed to separate people from the love of God. The only way to avoid falling or faltering is to walk according to the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER: Lord, let Your Spirit lead and guide me at all times, so that I may not go astray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
