Daily Reflection: BE TEMPERATE IN ALL THINGS – Tuesday 31st July, 2018

TUESDAY 31st JULY, 2018
TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 9: 19 – 27
MEMORY VERSE: 1 CORINTHIANS 9: 25 – “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever”.

An elderly minister shared a story of the Mission sent by a Church denomination in Nigeria to evangelise a community in the South-Western part of Nigeria in the early part of the 20th century. The Mission failed simply because the Church planted did not allow drumming and dancing which was the practice of the predominantly African Traditional Religion worshippers in the community. Decades later, the community gladly embraced another denomination which allowed God to be celebrated with drumming and dancing during corporate worship.

In our text, Paul exhorts on how to accommodate others in the bid to win them for Christ. Today, we need to understand the world in which our youths live in order to guide them successfully in the way of the Lord. Wholesome condemnation of their style will not help. The gap that exists between the old and the young is from one generation to another. It will always be there with its attendant misunderstanding and mutual suspicion.

While style, communication and methods might constantly change, one thing that will not change, however, is the Word of God. In our bid to accommodate divergent views of different groups, the Word of God must not be diluted or compromised for any reason. Marriage will continue to be between a man and a woman, according to the bible; Sex is reserved for the institution of holy matrimony; Congregants will respect their Pastors regardless of his youthfulness; Ministers of the gospel will respect elders and not talk down to the congregation, and sin will not be given another name to make it fashionable. These are just a few examples of the standards set by the Word of God.

When we allow the Holy Spirit to rule our hearts and lead us as Christians, – lay or ministers – the inspiration and empowerment will always be made available to take right decisions and make good choices which will be to the glory of God.

PRAYER: Dear heavenly Father, grant me the grace to lead a life of good discretion.
