TEXT: 1COR. 9:22-27
22. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. 23. And this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you. 24. Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. 25. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. 26. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27. But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

John 15:15-16
15. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. 16. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

The big question that most people ask all the time is ‘what is the meaning of life’? What is the purpose of living? Sometimes when you visit a big city like Lagos and watch the speed of people walking and running and heading towards different directions, you are tempted to ask: what are they running after? People work hard to excel in their various fields of interest, be it commerce, industry, academics, politics or social life. At the end of various pursuits, you may be able to own a home, earn a living, get married and have children, acquire more wealth and the quest continues. Are those all that we live for?

Humanity and creation does not come about by accident. The all-powerful Maker, Jehovah El-Shaddai created us in His own image and made us unique above all other creatures. “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have sent in place, what is man that You are mindful of him, the son of man that You care for him? You have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor’.

Because we were made in God’s likeness, we have all His peculiarities. Unfortunately, such peculiarities were damaged by our sins. We have a relationship vacuum that renderes us incomplete and unfulfilled. To fill up our emptiness, we must have relationship with Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, believe and accept Him as our Lord and Savior. By this simple act, we will key back into God’s original purpose for living. Jesus Christ is the only One counted worthy before God to be the bridge and mediator (1Tim. 2:1-6; Rev. 5:12). He is the door by which anyone can go to the Father.

Jesus Christ is, therefore, the key to achieving God’s purpose for our lives. That is why someone like Paul, with all his excellent credentials, bowed to Gospel and held it as the ultimate. Jesus is the key to relationship with God, love for fellow human beings, inner peace and eternal life. Some of the things we chase and crave for are good, but peace with God surpasses all.

1: AUTHOR of faith, eternal Word,
Whose Spirit breathes the active flame;
Faith, like its finisher and Lord,
Today as yesterday the same:

2: To Thee our humble hearts aspire,
And ask the gift unspeakable;
Increase in us the kindled fire,
In us the work of faith fulfil.

3: By faith we know Thee strong to save;
Save us, a present Saviour Thou!
Whate’er we hope, by faith we have,
Future and past subsisting now.

4: To him that in Thy name believesEternal life with Thee is given;
Into himself he all receives,
Pardon, and holiness, and heaven.

5: The things unknown to feeble sense,
Unseen by reason’s glimmering ray,
With strong, commanding evidence
Their heavenly origin display.

6: Faith lends its realising light,
The clouds disperse, the shadows fly;
The Invisible appears in sight,
And God is seen by mortal eye.

1Cor. 2:2 “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified”

My Father, my Father, always make Your ways and thoughts clear to me so that I may not wander into oblivion in Jesus name I pray. Amen.
