Theme: Be Good Before God
Passage: Ecclesiastes 2:18-25
King Solomon, in his search for the meaningful life, used many approaches such as pursuing pleasure. He also undertook great projects, bought slaves, herds and flock, amassed wealth, added many concubines to his haven and became the greatest person in Jerusalem. But none of these gave him satisfaction (Ecc 2:11).
Our satisfaction comes only when we strive for and practise Godliness. All we achieved in the world are for a while. We are not against hard work but the fruit of hard work done only to glorify ourselves or for personal pleasure will be passed on to those who may later lose or spoil it (Eccle. 2:19a). True enjoyment here and hereafter depends on our relationship with God and this relationship is made strong by obedience to God’s guideline for living. Those who really know how to enjoy life are the ones who take each day as a gift from God, thanking Him for it and serving Him in it.
Whatever you achieve without God in life is meaningless Eccle.2:19b. Even the simplest things such as eating have no pleasure if God is not acknowledged. Seek God in all you do in life, then you will have pleasure and find satisfaction for your soul.
MEMORY VERSE: Ecclesiastes 2:26, “To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”
HYMN: MHB 567 – IN full and glad surrender.
PRAYER: Increase my hunger, thirst for you oh Lord. Help me to acknowledge you in all my doings in the name of Jesus Christ my Saviour and my Lord.
