THEME: MAINTAIN YOUR DIGNITY

PASSAGE: MARK 9:42-50

HYMN: MHB 400 – TAKE my life and let it be

MESSAGE

One who is worthy of high esteem is the one who maintains his integrity and avoids disrespect that may come from one’s failures or carelessness.

In today’s text, Jesus is simply teaching about self-discipline or (self-control). “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off…” (Mark 9:43). Note that the hand is a legitimate and very useful part of the body. However, we are advised to cut it off, if it will make us record a shameful legacy. Christ’s desire is for us to build a godly society that produces a Christ-like lifestyle.

God gave testimony about Abraham’s integrity which he handed over to his son, Isaac. “For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and household after him…” (Genesis 18:19). No wonder, Isaac could not resist his father’s plan to offer him as a sacrifice to God. He definitely had been taught obedience, which he learned in practical terms from his father. Jesus taught that whatever you would like to be done to you, do same to others (Matthew 7:12).

What are you doing that could derail your integrity and godliness in society? – Cut it off! As Christians, we are programmed to follow Christ’s example. Christ denied Himself of many things to inherit a godly legacy. What are you leaving for the future generation? If you fail to discipline yourself, you may never have any record of dignity. Rather, an eternal punishment may be awaiting you. It is better for you to enter the Kingdom of God with one hand or one leg than having two hands, to go to hell (Mark 9:43). Live a dignified life, a blameless and stainless one.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, help me to know the importance of self-control, that I may leave a legacy of godliness for generations to come. Amen.
