THURSDAY 16TH APRIL, 2020

THEME: KNOW THE PURPOSE OF YOUR EXISTENCE

PASSAGE: JOHN 18: 33 – 37

HYMN: MHB 932- O SPLENDOUR of God’s glory bright

MEMORY VERSE: John 18:37 “You are the king, then said Pilate. Jesus answered, you are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to Me”

MESSAGE

The words “are you the king of the Jews?” are often taken by translators as a straight forward question. In fact, they form a derisive statement masquerading as a question. The Greek text would more properly be translated thus: Pilate entered the praetorium again and called Jesus, and said to him (not “asked him”), “You (emphatic) are the King of the Jews!”

St John Chrysostom explains the word Kingdom in the context as follows: “He means that Jesus does not derive His kingdom from the same source that earthly kings do, but that He has His sovereignty from above; in as much as He is not mere man, but far greater and more glorious than man: If My kingdom were of this world, then would My servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews. An earthly king, has his strength from his people, whereas the heavenly higher kingdom is sufficient of itself, wanting in nothing. And if His Kingdom was thus the greater of the two, it follows that He could not do His own will, to deliver Himself. Hence Jesus said, “My kingdom is not from hence;” i.e., is not of this world, not a temporal kingdom (John 17:15-16).”

Jesus was born to fulfill a mission. He suffered and later died for a divine purpose of existence. God created each person with a purpose to be fulfilled to His glory. Nobody is a product of accident. Any Christian without a proper understanding of his or her existence in life or in the world will only be pursuing shadows. As Christians, we are in this world for a purpose that has a divine will of God and not self will of man. We are to rescue the perishing and care for the lost through the spreading of the Gospel of Christ.

PRAYER: Almighty God direct my life to the purpose of my existence in this world in Jesus’ name. Amen
