THEME: The Promise Of The Father

PASSAGE: Acts Chapter 2 Verses 1 to 4. “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

This is the Word of God: Thanks be to God:

MESSAGE: The Theme for today The Promise Of The Father: Jesus promised His disciples on His Ascension Day, in Luke 24:49 that He would send the promise of His Father upon His disciples. He therefore instructed them to wait in Jerusalem, until they were empowered by God. This promise was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost, which was held seven weeks after Passover and Feast of Unleavened Bread. It was a sweet experience for the disciples. They expressed themselves so refreshingly as they spoke in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterances. The Holy Spirit used them as vehicle to minister to the teeming populace that gathered in Jerusalem that day.

It was an experience that could not be transferred. Each had his or her own experience. The cloven tongues rested on each person. From biblical experience, men received this baptism of the Holy Spirit again and again, with the evidence of speaking in tongues (Acts 10:45-46, 19:6, 1 Corin. ‪14:39‬.)

The lesson today is that when God promises, He fulfils. There is no promise He ever made that was not fulfilled. The human challenge is that we do not know when the promises would be fulfilled. We always want it hot but God has His own timing, too. We cannot force Him to our timing because He has the right to determine when His promises should be accomplished.

If it be so, what should we do? The answer is; SIMPLY WAIT. He said so; “But tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49b) Don’t stop asking, seeking, and knocking in due time you shall receive if you faint not.

MEMORY VERSE: Luke Chapter 24 Verse 49, “And, behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem until ye be endued with power from on high.”

English Methodist HYMN Book number 274
1. LORD, we believe to us and ours.
The apostolic promise given;
We wait the Pentecostal powers,
The Holy Ghost sent down from heaven.

2. To every one whom God shall call
The promise Is securely made;
To you far off—He calls you all;
Believe the word which Christ hath said :

3. The Holy Ghost, If I depart,
The Comforter, shall surely come,
Shall make the contrite sinner’s heart
His loved, His everlasting home.

4. Assembled here with one accord,
Calmly we wait the promised grace,
The purchase of our dying Lord :
Come, Holy Ghost, and fill the place.

5. If every one that asks may And,
If still Thou dost on sinners fall,
Come as a mighty rushing wind;
Great grace be now upon us all.

6. Behold, to Thee our souls aspire,
And languish Thy descent to meet :
Kindle In each the living fire,
And fix in every heart Thy seat.
