THEME: The Real Worshipper
PASSAGE: John 4:1–26
HYMN: MHB 550-O FOR a heart to praise my God
MEMORY VERSE: John 4:23 “But the hour cometh, and now is when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in Spirit and in truth; for the Father seeketh such to worship Him.
It is unfortunate that in some Christian assemblies today, the worship of God has become so carnally minded rather than being spiritual. We cannot obtain His favour and acceptance, because our worship is not in Spirit and in truth. May we not miss out in our worship like the Samaritans.
Notice the faith of the Samaritan woman. She opined, “I know that the Messiah” is coming who is called Christ. When He comes, He will tell us all things (John 4:25).
Since God desires to worship in Spirit and truth, it implies that those who are controlled by sinful nature cannot please Him. The Samaritan woman lived in sin and she could not understand the things of the Spirit when she encountered Jesus. If you indulge in sinful acts such as malice, envy, greed or sexual immorality don’t think that God will accept your worship. No way!
As Christians, we worship God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are expected to worship God not only in the ceremonial observances of the Mosaic institution or modern sequence but in spiritual ordinances (Gal. 3:3). Christ is not in support of the worship that will begin in the Spirit but end in the flesh.
As a matter of fact, believers are expected to depend upon God’s Spirit for strength and assistance (Phil. 3:3). God requires not only the outward part of our worship but also truth in the inward part (Ps. 51:6). He can never be deceived or mocked by our outward appearance. Those who will seek Him and find Him are those that are circumcised in the heart, not the outer flesh.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, grant me the grace to live and worship You in Spirit and in truth in Jesus’ name. Amen.
