THEME: Remain Loyal To God
PASSAGE: 1 Samuel 12:1-14
HYMN: MHB 404 – HOW blest is life if lived for Thee
MEMORY VERSE: 1 Samuel 12: 14 “If ye will fear the Lord and serve Him and obey His voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then shall both ye and the king that reigns over you continue following the Lord your God.”
This is Samuel’s farewell speech when Saul, the son of Kish, was presented to Israel as the first king. Samuel had lived in the House of God (1Sam 1: 25ff) and God gave him the prophecy against the House of Eli, the prophet.
Samuel had been a prophet for so many years in Israel. In fact, the Bible makes us understand that he judged Israel since his youth as a prophet of the Lord (1 Samuel 12: 2) and judged Israel for 40 years.
The striking feature about Samuel is that he was loyal to God and the children of Israel throughout the period he was a prophet. As the 16th judge over the children of Israel, he was not accused of any fraud, theft or embezzlement in whatever form (1 Samuel 12: 3-5).
This is a great lesson to us today as Christians. As a leader in the church, politician, Governor, Local Government Chairman, worker in the Church or the Ministry, are you like Samuel? As a trader and business person, do you not say that business and religion are different? Are you not a ‘Christian’ on Sundays alone and become a ‘wisp of fraud’ on other days?
The bane of our nation today is the presence of many leaders, who are devoid of integrity, diligence, compassion for the masses, faithfulness, honesty and trustworthiness in the political and religious settings. Rather, what the nation is experiencing from their leaders are selfishness, nepotism, oppression, suppression, embezzlement, misappropriation of public fund, miscarriage of justice to mention few.
A day of accountability will surely come one day. Be like Samuel, a good example of Christian loyalty to the service of God and His people. Remain loyal to God and you shall end well like Samuel.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, give me the grace to remain loyal to you all the days of my life. Amen.
