THEME: Godly Wisdom
PASSAGE: James 3:13-18
HYMN: MHB 160: THOU art the way: to Thee alone
MEMORY VERSE: James 3:17- But the wisdom from above is pure first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle, and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deeds; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy.
There are two types of wisdom- true wisdom false wisdom. True wisdom is from God while false wisdom is the one we use to cheat our fellow human beings. Godly wisdom is necessary in everything we do in order to do it effortlessly, too. True wisdom or Godly wisdom has its blessings; It excels folly just as light excels darkness; it gives life, it is better than exerting one’s strength; it gives joy and boldness and profitable to direct one’s ways. It makes people to “jaw-jaw” rather than to “war-war”
Divine or Godly wisdom is pure, holy, chaste, and clean. It is meek, peaceable, modest and kind. It is neither stubborn nor obstinate but yields to or give to others. It is full of good fruits as in Gal 5:22-23, it is neither hypocritical nor partial. It is full of mercy and compassion for others. It forgives and forgets wrongs done to us. On the other hand, fake or worldly wisdom is envious, does not think of heavenly bliss but only on the enjoyment and gains of this sinful world. Apostle Paul summarized it in the works of the flesh in Gal. 5:19-21
It is this Godly wisdom in Solomon that made him ask for God’s wisdom. A man who hasn’t any wisdom of God in Him will not ask God to direct him to rule his people. Such a person will be wise in his own eyes. Only those who have Godly wisdom will pray in the morning and ask God to direct his ways because the days are evil. Things are done better and faster when the wisdom of God is involved.
In our passage today James is telling us that it is part of our Godly wisdom to bridle our tongue because the tongue can set fire into the rest of the body if it is left uncontrolled. verse 17 says “ But the wisdom that is from above (i.e Godly or Divine wisdom) is first pure then peaceable, gentle and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.”
Let us, therefore, ask God to give us the wisdom from above to navigate the ups and downs of this world.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, bless me daily with wisdom from above and help me use it for your glory and praise. Amen.
